The new variant of COVID-19 was initially found in Denmark on July 24 in a patient with severe symptoms and gradually found in other symptomatic patients during sample testing and screening.

The mutated strain BA.2.86 has now been detected in South Africa and Switzerland and also found in the U.S., the U.K., and Israel.

Scientists around the globe mentioned monitoring the new variant but it was unlike to cause rapid spread and severeness in patients as immune responses were built up by the vaccination programme and prior infections.

“Dr. Nirav Shah, main deputy director of the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, stated that the organisation and others discovered the new strain last week, had conferences with experts over the weekend, and released a risk assessment on Wednesday. As of August 23, there have been nine occurrences of this, and the variant was also found in Swiss wastewater.”

Researchers are evaluating the effectiveness of new COVID-19 vaccinations against BA.2.86. Vaccinations have proved more effective than re-infection at preventing serious disease and death.
