The UK announced its decision to associate with Horizon Europe and Copernicus programmes through a new agreement with the European Union (EU).

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has negotiated a unique agreement with better financial conditions for the UK’s participation in Horizon Europe, the biggest research partnership initiative in the world. As a result, UK scientists will have access to this programme.

“From today (Thursday 7 September), UK researchers can apply for grants and bid to take part in projects under the Horizon programme, with certainty that the UK will be participating as a fully associated member for the remaining life of the programme to 2027.”

The UK has been excluded from the EU’s research programmes for the last three years. Their decision to join the programme will give them the opportunity to associate with it. The scientists are celebrating the decision as it opens a broad way for their research.

Horizon will give unrivalled opportunities for UK companies and universities to develop new technologies and research in areas from health to AI.

This also initiates cooperation with other countries like Norway, New Zealand and Israel. Other countries including Korea and Australia are looking to join.

“This deal is a crucial step forward on our mission to become a science and tech superpower by 2030.”

Michelle Donelan, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology

Reuters reported that the scientists expressed hope to work with European colleagues might once again flourish after the unavoidable break, with universities like Oxford and Imperial College London stating that the agreement will improve partnerships on the world’s most important problems.
