Colossal Biosciences, the business seeking to make extinction optional, has resurrected a prehistoric predator best known for its role in Game of Thrones.
Approximately 20 distinctive genetic variations related to distinct dire wolf features were discovered. These characteristics include greater stature, a more robust body, broader heads, stronger jaws, and thicker, usually white, fur.
They edited gray wolf cells’ DNA using CRISPR-Cas9 technology, a precise gene-editing method. This entailed incorporating the 20 known dire wolf genetic variations into the gray wolf genome. Consider CRISPR to be molecular scissors capable of cutting DNA at particular spots, allowing genetic information to be inserted or deleted.
The reconstructed egg cells were stimulated in the lab to divide and become embryos. The embryos were then placed into surrogate domestic dogs.

After a 62-day gestation period, three puppies were born: two males called Romulus and Remus (born in October 2024) and a female named Khaleesi (born in January 2025).
The dire wolf pups are currently held in a secure 2,000-acre facility, where they are constantly monitored by animal care specialists, drones, and live cameras.
While the puppies have physical characteristics that resemble dire wolves, their behavior is still being monitored. Experts point out that acquired behaviors, which would normally be passed down by wild parents, may be lacking.
